Seascape

A romanticized seascape showing an empty horizon and dramatic effects in the sky. The calm sea is painted as layers of horizontal colour in tones of grey with undulating lines of dark paint to represent the movement of the waves. The sky occupies just over half the picture space. It has been shown as a bunch of different colours to represent clouds, pink, yellow and white streaks along the top part of the sky, small purple masses to indicate lower cloud and a line of lilac just above the horizon. The setting sun is suggested in the centre of the sky, with reflections of pink in the water in the foreground. The painting is inscribed with the artist's monogram, and '15 M' lower right.
