Portsmouth Harbour, with 'Victory' saluting
This does not look like a grand occasion and appears to be early morning: whether the smoke from 'Victory' on the left as port flagship is a salute or a morning gun is not clear. It is lying towards the Gosport side of the harbour. The dating is supplied by that of Wyllie's arrival to live in Portsmouth in 1906 and the presence of what is probably a three-funnelled County-class cruiser further right. the large structure at distant right centre is the C1 floating coal depot, the largest in the world, which was built on the Tyne in 1902 and came into service at Portsmouth in 1904, remaining until scrapped in 1964.
