The photographer is on the towing deck of the tug looking aft and to starboard showing two men at the stern by the capstan winch controlling the running gog attached to the manilla hawser which is connected to the stern of the North Earl (1956). The steam tug St. Merryn (1945) is close to the port side of the tanker, the steam tug St. Denys (1929) is alongside the starboard side and the St. Mawes (1951) is connected to, and pulling round, the starboard bow of the North Earl.
