Annotated drawing of the visit of the Prince of Wales and the German Emperor to the Armed Auxiliary Teutonic of the White Star Line (unfinished)
Medium includes grey wash. This relates to a finished oil: 'Spithead, 4th August 1889. H.I.M. the Emperor of Germany and H.R.H the Prince of Wales inspecting the 'Teutonic' Mercantile Armed Cruiser, White Star Line'. Wyllie was among selected guests of White Star's owner, Thomas Ismay, who sailed from Liverpool on the ship to her review at Spithead . Queen Victoria watched from the Royal Yacht 'Victoria and Albert' there while the rest of the royal party went on board: Wyllie positioned himself forward on the capstan where he could get a good view to make sketches. The Prince of Wales, however, left the prescribed red-carpet route and came over to him, asked to see them and handed them round (see M.A. Wyllie, 'We Were One' ...(1935), p. 114). This is presumably one of those sketches: Wyllie continued to make more over the next couple of days. The oil painting showing the ship fine on the starboard bow (as in PAF1173) and measuring 61 x 40 in. was shown at the RA in 1891, no 407, and the Berlin International Exhibition of Fine Arts in 896. It originally belonged to directors of the White Star Line, Captain H.F. David and Commodore Sir Berram Fox Hayes (who, inter alia, commanded 'Teutonic') and was sold at Sotheby's 30 May 1990, lot 611 and again in their Victorian and pre-Raphaelite sale on 15 December 2016, lot 37.
