On board a Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company cargo liner of the Strathardle class (1967), probably near Tamano, Japan. The ship appears to be at anchor in a harbour. The photographer is looking aft from the port side of the mast house showing a large group of Japanese men standing on the port side of the deck abreast the open hatches of numbers 4 and 5 holds. They are each holding a yellow document and this may be at the time of a commissioning or hand-over ceremony. The P & O houseflag is at the port outer halyard. A vertical format image.
