The photographer is on the port side looking to starboard and slightly forward showing the ship's chief officer standing by the engine control console and using one of the ship's telephones The Strathardle ran trials on 7 January and was handed over to P & O on 20 January before sailing on her maiden voyage to London via Kobe, Yokohama and Hong Kong.
