He is sitting on number 4 hatch and the photographer, the apprentice Henry Bird, is looking to port and slightly forward from the starboard side. In Bird's photograph album (ALB1405) this print is captioned "Mr. Lamming - the 2nd Officer (with Trans-Pacific growth) September 1937". A vertical format negative.
