Captain Loads shaving the head of apprentice Horace Hayward on board the Bank Line general cargo ship Inverbank (1924) while at sea. They are on the boat deck abaft the funnel and the photographer, Henry Bird, who was also an apprentice, is looking forward and to port. Apprentice John Naylor is in the background sitting on lifeboat number 4. In Bird's photograph album (ALB1405) this print is captioned "West Atlantic August 1937" but in his autobiography "Sea Dreams" published in 1997 he says this is in the Pacific in September 1937 en route from San Diego, California, to Kamaishi, Japan.
