Apprentice Jim Paton gathering wood on number three hatch on board the Bank Line cargo vessel Tymeric (1919) while at sea in the Indian Ocean. While on a voyage from Newcastle, N.S.W. to the U.K. severe weather delays caused the ship to run out of coal and the crew had to cut timber baulks and shifting boards into four feet lengths for use in the furnaces. The photographer, who is looking aft, was also an apprentice on board.
