Two Spanish Nationalist officers on board the Bank Line general cargo ship Inverbank (1924) at Huelva, Spain.
Two Spanish Nationalist officers on board the Bank Line general cargo ship Inverbank (1924) at Huelva, Spain. They are standing on the starboard side of the upper deck abreast number 3 hatch. The photographer, Henry Bird, is looking aft and to starboard showing the forward end of the boat deck. He was an apprentice on board the Bank Line cargo vessel Inverbank (1924) which was at Huelva to load a cargo of copper sulphate for delivery to Marcus Hook, Philadelphia. His photo album (Reference ALB1405) contains a print from this negative captioned "Two Spanish customs officials (one in 'Franco' uniform) at Huelva June 1937" but his autobiography "Sea Dreams" describes these men as "Franco's men on board as guards. One was a soldier and the other a naval man who taught me to splice a rope". Slide 6 from the "Apprentice Boy", Captain Henry P. Bird's lecture about his life as an apprentice for Bank Line in the period 1937-1941. The lecture consists of 39 slides.
