Drying salt cod on board the Bank Line general cargo ship Tymeric (1919) after a cyclone off the east coast of Australia. The photographer, who was one of three apprentices serving on board the ship, is looking aft from the base of the mainmast showing crew members laying out the fish on number five hatch and the sacks are draped over the derricks. The Indian chief steward is nearest the camera. Awning bars are rigged over the poop deck. The ship carried a large stock of salted cod in sacks as emergency rations for the crew but water entered the lazaret during the cyclone and dampened the sacks. After the storm the sacks were brought up on deck and the fish were spread out over the hatches to dry in the sun. Slide 28 from the "Apprentice Boy", Captain Henry P. Bird's lecture about his life as an apprentice for Bank Line in the period 1937-1941. The lecture consists of 39 slides.
