Chinese employees of the British Phosphate Commission playing football on Nauru Island, South Pacific. The Chinese were employed on three year contracts and had their own community facilities on the island. The photographer was an apprentice serving on board the Bank Line cargo vessel Tymeric (1919) which was moored at the island to load a cargo of phosphate for delivery to Australia. Slide 31 from the "Apprentice Boy", Captain Henry P. Bird's lecture about his life as an apprentice for Bank Line in the period 1937-1941. The lecture consists of 39 slides.
