He is in uniform and is standing on the starboard side of the bridge, looking forward. He has a pair of Admiralty binoculars round his neck and there are no medal ribbons on his jacket. His left hand is holding the steel framing above the helmsman's position. The photographer is looking aft and to starboard from the centreline of the bridge.
