The Relief of Gibraltar, 29 August 1704
The oil painting by an unknown British artist executed in a Dutch 17th-century style shows the magnified relief of Gibraltar and its fortifications silhouetted against a clouded Mediterranean sky. In the foreground appears the stylized scene from the War of the Spanish Succession, 1701-14, during which an Anglo-Dutch fleet captured the fortress of Gibraltar on 30 April 1704.
