A view of the canvas covers on the quay at Sheerness Dockyard taken on board the refrigerated fruit carrier Jamaica Planter (1959) The photographer is standing on the port side of the bridge looking south west by west towards the cold store at Sheerness Dockyard. A man wearing a grey jacket and white gloves is standing next to the guard rail of the ship interacting with some ropes in the foreground. The banana discharge system from the ship to the quay is on the left hand side of the image in the background. The discharge system is depositing bananas into a metal quarter circle shaped structure covered with a canvas roof in the middle ground. There are three containers with the rear doors opened situated on the right hand side of the structure on the quay side. Various buildings and numerous quays of Sheerness Dockyard are in the background. This is Slide 44 of Captain Henry P. Bird's lecture titled "Caribbean Cargoes", about his service as Second Officer on board Jamaica Planter (1959) and Port Officer for Jamaica Banana Producers Steam Ship Company based at Kingston, Jamaica from 6 January 1971 to 26 April 1971. The lecture consists of 45 slides.
