Annual prizegiving day on board the boys' training ship Arethusa (1849) at her permanent moorings in the River Thames off Greenhithe, Kent. The photographer is looking aft from the starboard side of the upper deck abreast the foremast. Boys in uniform are sat on benches listening to a speech being made by Victor Albert George Child Villiers, 7th Earl of Jersey, who is standing on the poop facing forward. A number of special guests are sitting on the poop. Awnings are rigged over the deck and along the sides. A note on the negative states that the photographer was using Camera B.
