The Wreck Buoy marking the position of the S.S. Patria (1894) off Deal in The Downs.
The Wreck Buoy marking the position of the S.S. Patria (1894) off Deal in The Downs. The steamship Patria was on voyage from New York to Hamburg when she caught fire off the North Hinder Light Vessel in November 1899. She was abandoned and drifted ashore, still on fire, between Deal and Walmer. She was refloated but foundered in The Downs on 22 November 1899. All attempts at salvage were unsuccessful and in January 1902, when the wreck was covered by 30 feet of water at low water spings, the light vessel marking the position was replaced by this wreck buoy. A note on the negative says the photographer was using Camera B.
