A starboard bow view of the wreck of the steamship Ardoe (1880) beached off Sandown Castle, The Downs, Kent.

A starboard bow view of the wreck of the steamship Ardoe (1880) beached off Sandown Castle, The Downs, Kent. The hull is broken amidships and the stern is angled to port. All the superstructure has been stripped off and the top strake of hull plating has been removed. The foremast is still standing and is being used to support a derrick for unloading the scrap. The ship was blown ashore after a collision with the French Strasbourg on 31 January 1898 and became a total wreck. Deal Pier is in the right background. A note on the negative says the photographer was using Camera A. Negatives Numbers N18828 to N18842 are of this wreck.
