A starboard midship detail of the wreck of the steamship Ardoe (1880) beached off Sandown Castle, The Downs, Kent.
A starboard midship detail of the wreck of the steamship Ardoe (1880) beached off Sandown Castle, The Downs, Kent. The photographer is looking at the break in the hull. All the superstructure has been stripped off and the top strake of hull plating has been removed. The foremast is still standing and is being used to support a derrick for unloading the scrap. Two men are aboard removing some of the deck plating. The ship was blown ashore after a collision with the French Strasbourg on 31 January 1898 and became a total wreck. A note on the negative says the photographer was using Camera A. Negatives Numbers N18828 to N18842 are of this wreck.
