The hull is broken amidships and the bow and stern have swung to port. All of the deck plating has been removed and the tops of the two boilers are visible amidships. The photographer is looking aft and to port from the starboard side of the hold. The ship was blown ashore after a collision with the French Strasbourg on 31 January 1898 and became a total wreck.
