A slightly distant starboard quarter view of the wreck of the steamship Ardoe (1880) beached off Sandown Castle, The Downs, Kent. The hull is broken amidships and the bow and stern have swung to port. All of the superstructure and much of the upper framing and plating of the hull has been removed. The foremast and derrick and the rudder stock are still in situ. A cutter rigged Rye smack is alongside the starboard side abreast the foremast to receive some of the scrap. The ship was blown ashore after a collision with the French Strasbourg on 31 January 1898 and became a total wreck. A note on the negative says the photographer was using Camera A and it is evening.
