On board the wreck of the steamship Ardoe (1880) beached off Sandown Castle, The Downs, Kent. The hull is broken amidships and the bow and stern have swung to port. All of the superstructure and much of the upper framing and plating of the hull has been removed. The foremast and derrick are still in situ. The photographer is looking forward from the port side of the lower deck abreast the after hold. The two boilers and the top of the 2 cylinder compound engine are in the centre of the picture. The ship was blown ashore after a collision with the French Strasbourg on 31 January 1898 and became a total wreck. A note on the vertical format negative says the photographer was using Camera A and it is evening. Negatives Numbers N18828 to N18842 are of this wreck.
