On board the wreck of the steamship Ardoe (1880) beached off Sandown Castle, The Downs, Kent. The photographer is looking aft from the port side of the lower deck abreast the after hold. Some of the aft framing, the plating at the turn of the counter and the rudder stock are still in situ. A clinker-built dayboat or workboat is alongside the port quarter of the wreck. It is seen from astern and has a gaff sail hoisted. A young woman and a boy are sitting in the stern of the boat while the boatman holds it alongside the wreck The ship was blown ashore after a collision with the French Strasbourg on 31 January 1898 and became a total wreck. A note on the negative says the photographer was using Camera B. Negatives Numbers N18828 to N18842 are of this wreck
