A starboard side view, taken from abaft the beam, of the partially sunken wreck of the steamship Patria (1894) in The Downs, between Deal and Walmer, Kent. It is high tide and an explosive charge has just been detonated amidships by the funnel. Only the foremast, mainmast, funnel and machinery spaces ventilators are visible. A wreck marking light vessel is in the left background. The Patria was wrecked on 17 November 1899 after being abandoned heavily on fire. A note on the negative says the photographer was using Camera B but the explosion has made him move the camera, blurring the exposure. Negatives Numbers N18848 to N18867 are of this wreck.
