Halstead villagers practising for the Armistice celebrations in a garden at Halstead, Essex. Two rows of children are dressed in patriotic costumes and are wearing sashes bearing the names of countries of the British Empire. Two of the sashes have the words Victory and War. Standing on the left of the picture, next to the children, is the Halstead Boys Naval Brigade Unit's second-in-command, who is wearing a military uniform and carrying a bolt action rifle with fixed bayonet at the slope over his left shoulder. At the other end of the row is one of the unit's female instructors, wearing a naval style uniform and holding a flag at the slope over her right shoulder. Other people in the background are in uniform or fancy dress.
