The Sannomiya Shinto Shrine in Kobe, Japan. The photographer is standing across from the entrance to the shrine on Hanadokeisen Street. Five Japanese men and women are walking on the pavement in front of the shrine. A concrete ceremonial arch is just off the pavement and in front of the shrine. A carved concrete post with Japanese symbols stand either side of the arch. Mrs Joan Bird, the wife of the photographer, and Mrs Yvonne Denholm, wife of the Chief Officer of the tanker Malwa (1961), are walking up the steps towards the entrance to the shrine.
