A starboard side view, taken from well ahead of the beam, of the two masted topsail schooner Catherine (1856) under sail in The Downs. She is on the port tack and has all sails set except for the topsail and the main topmast staysail. Her topsail yard is broken and the two parts have been lashed together using a plank to support both parts. A Missions to Seamen rowing boat is being towed alongside. The horizon is not quite level.
