A slightly distant starboard side view, taken from well abaft the beam, of the three masted barquentine Mary Ann (1863) in a sinking condition in The Downs. The North Deal lifeboat Mary Somerville (1888) is at anchor astern of her. A note on the negative says the photographer is using Camera A. The negative is broken into two pieces. The Mary Ann drove ashore at Kingsdown in wind conditions SE force 9 on 29 September while on a voyage from North Shields to Cherbourg with coal. She was refloated only to go ashore again off Sandown Castle where she became a total wreck. Negatives numbers N19604 to N19607 were taken on the same day.
