A starboard side view, taken from abaft the beam, of the three masted barquentine Mary Ann (1863) in a sinking condition in The Downs. The bow of the North Deal lifeboat Mary Somerville (1888) is on the left. An unidentified two funnelled steamer is standing by in the right background. A note on the negative says the photographer is using Camera B. The Mary Ann drove ashore at Kingsdown in wind conditions SE force 9 on 29 September while on a voyage from North Shields to Cherbourg with coal. She was refloated only to go ashore again off Sandown Castle where she became a total wreck. Negatives numbers N19604 to N19607 were taken on the same day.
