Lieutenant Henry R. Bowers, in polar clothing, standing with the pony Victor. Bowers is holding onto the pony's lead with his right hand and has his left under the pony's muzzle.

On 13 October 1911, Scott wrote in his journal that "the ponies have been behaving well, with exceptions. Victor is now quite easy to manage, thanks to Bowers' patience".
