A smith working at his bench in the spring making workshop in Number 5 Machine Shop in Chatham Dockyard. A long handled tool is clamped in the vice and he is pulling the handle down over a spring fitted to the base of the tool, which has a marlin spike in it. In his left hand he is holding a pair of tongs against the base of the tool. An electric pedestal drill, a tin of electrodes and a range of tools are on the bench. Various springs are on the bench in the foreground. Transparencies numbers PCT3306 to PCT3308 was taken on the same occasion.
