A smith and two hammermen forging a stanchion in Number 5 Machine Shop in Chatham Dockyard. The smith, wearing green overalls, is taking the red-hot billet out of the furnace as one of the hammermen, wearing white overalls, is walking towards the steam hammer. On the left there is a stock of tools, including hammers, tongs, moulds and weights. Transparencies numbers PCT3313 to PCT3323 were taken during the same operation.
