A smith and two hammermen forging a stanchion in Number 5 Machine Shop in Chatham Dockyard. The smith, wearing green overalls, is placing the red-hot billet on the B & S Massey steam hammer base as one of the hammermen, wearing white overalls, is holding a mould over the billet. Another hammerman in white overalls is standing by the control lever of the steam hammer. Transparencies numbers PCT3313 to PCT3323 were taken during the same operation.
