A smith and two hammermen forging a stanchion in Number 5 Machine Shop in Chatham Dockyard. The smith, wearing green overalls, is using tongs to hold the red hot billet in place on the base of the B & S Massey steam hammer while one of the hammermen, wearing white overalls, is holding a moulding iron over the top of the billet. The other hammerman, also wearing white overalls, is operating the control lever of the hammer. Transparencies numbers PCT3324 to PCT3330 were taken during the same operation.
