A smith and two hammermen forging a stanchion in Number 5 Machine Shop in Chatham Dockyard. The smith, wearing green overalls, is using tongs to hold the red hot billet in place on the base of the B & S Massey steam hammer while one of the hammermen, wearing white overalls, is using a pair of ball shaped moulding tongs. The other hammerman, also wearing white overalls, is operating the control lever of the hammer and the hammer's drophead has just struck the billet. Transparencies numbers PCT3324 to PCT3330 were taken during the same operation.
