A smith and a hammerman forging a large square billet using an heavy duty B & S Massey steam hammer in Number 5 Machine Shop in Chatham Dockyard. The smith, wearing green overalls, is using a pair of tongs to hold the red-hot billet on the hammer base. The hammerman, wearing white overalls, is at the control lever of the steam hammer. The hammer's drophead is in contact with the billet. The photographer is standing to the side of the hammerman. Transparencies numbers PCT3337 to PCT3354 were taken during the same operation.
