A smith and a hammerman forging a large square billet using an heavy duty B & S Massey steam hammer in Number 5 Machine Shop in Chatham Dockyard. The smith, wearing green overalls, is using a pair of tongs to hold the red-hot billet on the hammer base. The hammerman, wearing white overalls, is at the control lever of the steam hammer. The photographer is standing at the back of the hammer and in the background are a film crew making a video of the smith's activities. The man holding the JVC KV-2000 camera is Pieter van der Merwe.
