A smith making a chain at his bench in Number 5 Machine Shop in Chatham Dockyard. He is using a hammer and a steel wedge to open the gap in a heated link laid on a steel block. A home made pair of pliers is on the bench and the pipe of an oxy-acetylene blow torch is in the foreground. Transparencies numbers PCT3365 to PCT3378 were taken during the same operation.
