Length of submarine cable. Atlantic Cable 1866. Core of seven copper wires coated with four layers of gutta percha alternating with four layers of Chatterton's compound covered with a cushion of tarred jute. The outer sheathing consists of twelve iron wires covered by tarred hemp and compound.
