Three men working by an anvil and hearth in No. 1 Smithery in Chatham Dockyard. A man wearing a leather coat is using a special tool to shape a red-hot piece on an anvil alongside the hearth, which has a cooling trough next to it. Two other men, one of whom is wearing a supervisor's white coat, are watching the work being undertaken. One of these men is thought to be Mr. Knowler.
