Captain Lawrence Oates standing next to the stables for four ponies on board Terra Nova
Captain Lawrence Oates standing next to the stables for four ponies on the upper deck by the forecastle bulkhead on board the exploration ship Terra Nova (1884). The steam windlass is on the right in front of the foremast.
A further fifteen stalls had been constructed under the forecastle to house the total of 19 Siberian ponies. Of the ponies themselves, Cherry-Garrard wrote that "it must be confessed at once that some of these ponies were very poor material, and it must be conceded that Oates who was in charge of them started with a very great handicap".
A number '5' is on the white circular dot on the slide.
