A Relic of Past Forests
A rock hammer propped up against one side of a geological specimen containing fossilised wood found during the expedition undertaken by the Northern Party. The hammer is placed at a slight angle to the rock.
This photograph is featured in Dr. Raymond Priestley's book "Antarctic Adventure: Scott's Northern Party' in which Levick is cited as the official photographer of the Northern Party and credited with taking the majority of the photographs. Priestley wrote that "most of the wood and the impression of a tree-trunk was found" on 31 January and 1 February after the Party had recrossed to the Priestley Glacier moraine.
A number '106' is in a white dot on the slide.
