The return of the Western Geological party
An informal group photograph of the four members of the Second Western Geological Party on board the exploration ship Terra Nova (1884). The men, in grimy clothing, are (left to right) geologist Thomas Griffith Taylor, geologist Frank Debenham, Sub-Lieutenant Tryggve Gran, and Petty Officer Robert Forde. The geological party had journeyed to Granite Harbour to survey the area and conduct geological observations. On the ship, after the Party's return on 18 February, "Ponting came along and after complimenting [them] on [their] villainous appearance, begged [them] to remain picturesque until the sun showed enough light for a photograph!"
