An unidentified expedition member from the 1910-3 British Antarctic Expedition sitting to the right of an ice fumarole (an opening in the volcano through which sulphurous gases emerge and ice forms around this volcanic activity).

The photograph was taken during the ascent of Mount Erebus in December 1912. The Party was composed of Raymond Priestley, Tryggve Gran, Frederick Hooper, Harry Dickason, George Abbott, and Frank Debenham. Based on their attire, the individual pictured is most likely Frederick Hooper or George Abbott. In the second volume of 'Scott's Last Expedition', Dr. Raymond Priestley recalls taking photograph after photograph while approaching the active crater of Mount Erebus and he specifically mentions reaching, and beginning to photograph, a second group of fumaroles. Tryggve Gran also took photographs while on the ascent.
