An unidentified expedition member standing in front of an ice formation
An unidentified expedition member from the 1910-3 British Antarctic Expedition standing on Mount Erebus in front of an ice fumarole (an opening in the volcano through which sulphurous gases emerge and ice forms around this volcanic activity).
The summit of Mount Erebus is visible in the background with smoke from the volcano billowing across the sky. The photograph was taken during the ascent of Mt. Erebus in December 1912 and the individual pictured is most likely Frederick Hooper or George Abbott.
A slide of the same photograph is within Sir George Simpson's collection of lantern slides at Scott Polar Research Institute.
