The unsigned drawing has been attributed to Willem van de Velde, the Elder, as indicated by an old inscription on the back: 'Wm Vandevelt'. Its stylistic resemblance to drawings of similar subjects from the Milford Collection, now at the NMM, suggest a tentative date of about 1655.
