A group of ten fishing people
The figure study shows a group of fishermen and women with baskets in calm conversation.
The unsigned drawing’s stylistic resemblance to drawings of similar subjects from the Milford Collection, now at the NMM, suggest a tentative attribution to Willem van de Velde, the Elder, and a date of about 1655, when the artist was particularly busy with grisailles, in which he introduced groups of people in the foreground.
