A group of five fishing people
This is a study of five figures. Two women are depicted on the left, one standing and one seated. Three men are standing on the right, one of whom is carrying a large sack on his shoulder.
The unsigned drawing’s stylistic resemblance to drawings of similar subjects from the Milford Collection, now at the NMM, suggest a tentative attribution to Willem van de Velde, the Elder, and a date of about 1655, when the artist was particularly busy with grisailles, in which he introduced groups of people in the foreground.
