A group of five men
The study shows five men, one crouching, two seated on the slightly raised ground and two standing on the right. The artist has reinforced the outline of one of the seated figures in ink.
The unsigned drawing has been tentatively attributed to Willem van de Velde, the Elder, and dated to 1655, when the artist was particularly busy with grisailles, in which he introduced groups of people in the foreground.
