Four figures seated on a bench and two standing
Four men are seated on a bench to the left of the composition, while the two at the centre look and point behind themselves in animated conversation, the ones sitting at each end lean forward, one of them smoking a pipe. At the centre of the composition a man and a woman are standing engaged in conversation. In the right background another man has placed his foot onto a balustrade or bench.
The unsigned drawing has been tentatively attributed to Willem van de Velde, the Elder, and dated to 1655, when the artist was particularly busy with grisailles, in which he introduced groups of people in the foreground.
